Join us for construction, creativity and fire in an unforgettable and transformative experience!
The unpredictable and amazing world of Raku, the 16th-century Japanese art of wabi-sabi (imperfect beauty), is a hands-on elemental experience. We will build the kiln, throw and/or hand-shape wares with Raku specific clay, then experience the hands-on (as much as you’d like) low-temperature, rapid Raku firing in our newly built kiln, resulting in one-of-a-kind pieces with smokey, metallic or crackle effects.
Day 1 - May 16: The workshop begins by exploring the concept, process and various forms of Raku firing. Then, together, we will build a portable Raku kiln from the ground up using easy-to-find materials for efficient low-cost firing.
Day 2 - May 17: With the kiln built, everyone will throw or hand build 2 or 3 forms. We will experiment with two types of clay designed to withstand the rapid heating and cooling process of Raku. You will learn new tips and techniques for creating strong and beautiful pieces for Raku firing.
Day 3 - May 31: We will fire up the kiln, load it and experience the thrilling Raku firing process; from kiln to reduction chamber filled with combustable materials that will create unique surfaces and color flashes. (Rain Date: TBD)
Note:
If there is great interest, we may open additional sessions.
